The Salem Humane Society, Inc. is a nonprofit animal welfare organization that strives to improve the quality of life for homeless or abused animals. We promote responsible animal ownership in Columbiana County by educating the public about proper veterinary care and animal welfare issues. We provide programs that aid in the reduction of pet over-populations, as well as, adopt companion and domesticated animals into lifelong homes. It is our goal to provide a deputized County Humane Officer who assists in the enforcement of animal cruelty laws. |

Agents remove 140 dogs from Lisbon home |

LISBON - Approximately 140 dogs were removed from a Freemen Road residence Wednesday. County sheriff's deputies and agents from the Humane Society of the United States and Columbiana County Humane Society descended on the property to remove 140 Manchester terriors that had apparently been hoarded and kept in highly unsanitary conditions with little or no access to food or water, according to a press release issued by the Humane Society of the United States.
"Unfortunately, like all hoarding cases that we respond to, the guardian of these dogs has amassed so many animals that she could no longer care for them properly," said Dean Vickers, Ohio state director for the Humane Society of the United States.
The animals were living in the property owner's home, inside trailers and in wire kennels which were spread throughout the property.
The dogs were taken to a nearby emergency shelter where they will be medically evaluated and treated
Messages left for Columbiana County humane agent Brenda Austin were not returned Wednesday. A spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States could not be reached for comment. |
